Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hey guys

I just put a rebuilt 22r into my 1980 4x4 - Crank bearings, piston rings, all gaskets, valve seals, etc.

Now, I think my problem lies within the carb settings. It idles at around 1100 rpm, and if i bring down the idle mixture screw it runs terribly (sputters, etc) below 1000rpm. What are the stock settings for all of the mixture screws on the carb?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

Yeah i had problems with my carb when i got my new rebuit. Honestly man, i realize it isn't probably in the budget right now since the reuild but you should just look into gettin a Webber Carb, they work a lot better and are less of a headache, and they give you more power anyway.

I.. disagree. Webers are much more picky and touchy with adjustments. They perform better on-road (once tuned properly), but the stock aisin is a little better offroad with angles.

I read the FAQ, but i still dont seem to see where all of the screws are identified / mentioned in terms of how many turns out from seated.

Its all in that section. I don't have a diagram up on the location of the screws, and sorry for that, I jsut never got around to it.

This exploded diagram shows the screws locations, however:

To reset the idle mixture screw for a 22R:
ò 1982 - 2.5 turns from fully closed
ò 1983-88 - 4 turns from fully closed.

Try each setting and see which one works.

If you look in that diagram linked above, on the left side: see the piece (its not labeled) that is in between the text AAP and Choke Opener? That cap (that is not labeled) I'm fairly sure it was only on pre-83's. If you don't have that cap, there will just be an empty uncapped section in the carb body, and its most likely an 83+.

Remember, once you get the base-line setting, you will still need to tweak it per the procedure I mention in the faq section linked above <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Good luck,

Scerb

He's got a dual-row timing chain so it must be 81-82.
