Getting the Wheeling Fever
I have a 93 4runner 4wd with a 3.0 and auto tranny. It's no tire burner, but for 170,000 miles it's no slouch either. I haven't had it long and have been wonderin about the gear ratio. I couldn't find the codes you listed above on my door, but I did see a G144 on the door sticker. Any more input or info on the door sticker code??

I should have said the door jam, not the door. The G144(G-14-4) is the correct code. Your code says that you have an 8" ring gear w/4.87 gears and 4 pinion 3rd member. For reference my '91 22re code was G292m for an 8" rring gear with 4.87 gears and a 2 pinion 3rd member. Your Runner came with the 31" tire factory option. Unfortunately if you decide to run bigger tires and want to regear, you have to get a 3rd member from a 5-spd, or one from an auto that didn't come w/4.87's. Unlike the standard oem diffs, the 4.87 3rds housing cannot be regeared. However since you can sell the 3rds to people running 33's and a 5-spd you wont be out any money, could probably trade them your 3rds+cash for theirs.

Wow, according to the charts I found I have the 4.87 gears and the 4 pinion rear! I might just throw on some 33's now. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Dangit, you posted while I wuz a typin. I was plannin on runnin either a 33 or a 34 ltb swamper. Looks like I need some 5.29's and some different 3rd's. My runner has rear anti lock brakes too. Does this matter on which 3rd I get? Sounds like my low gears are a blessing and a curse at the same time. Sorry if I'm hijackin your thread by the way.

Also, is there an actual chart somewhere online?

Dr Time, you have 4.10's.

Here's the easiest link to understand of the ones I looked at. http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

What a great reference you have there. Thanks. My January 93 T100 4by has the overdrive auto, ADD and supposedly, a limited slip diff. Code is A04A. Am running 16 inch tundra (02) rims with 265's in winter and they have an 8% speedometer under read. During the summer I run 20 x 8.5 inch ions with low profile 275/45r20 Ventus's. Height of the 16's is a little over 30" and the ventus's are around 29. The speedometer reading with the 20's is about 5% off. Truck is a dog but what 3.0 is not. Motor loves to run at 3 grand under load, so it does ok, just will not beat a Vega or a Pinto. But a 4K truck with a 180 inch motor should be a dog. Anyway, thanks for the link. It helps to know what is under there.

I am not sure, though I would think the anti-lock set-up would be on the axle housing and not the 3rd member.

As mentioned you have 4.10 gears w/ the v6 4 pinion diff, stock tires for you gears would be 28's. This is why you rig feels do slow with the 31's, the 31's are almost 11% bigger. Not only do the larger tires effect your performance, but your speedometer/mileage readings as well. At 60mph you are going about 66, and for every 100 miles the odometer clocks you have traveled about 10.7 extra miles. If you are going to use the Runner as a DD, or commuter you will want to replace the 31's w/28's, or change the gears to 4.88's, but yoo should really wait to swap the gears until you decide what tire size you want.
