Does changing the gears to 4.88 just involve the differential? Sorry, i'm uber-noob to trucks and 4x4's.

Billy, he 3rd member on your truck has the antilock sensor in the 3rd member. If you want to regear, you can either live without it or try to find a 3rd member with the hole.

Also, you may or may not know this, but you can't regear your factory 4.88 third member. You'll have to find a normal V6 third and regear it. Running 5.29 gears and 33s puts you back to stock.

If you have to ask about a SAS, you're not ready for it.

Keep in mind, that you can re-gear the diffs you've got. Once you go with these factory 4.88, THOSE cannot be re-geared.

Getting the Wheeling Fever
Dr Time, the only thing you would hafta swap doing a gear swap would be the third members. You can either have a new ring and pinion installed onto yours (and whatever shims seals and other bearings are needed) or just swap out your third member for another one. For the rear all you gotta do is drain the gear oil, remove the brake drum, unbolt the four bolts on the back side of the backing plate and slide the axle out. Sometimes the axle comes out easy, sometimes not. Repeat for the other side, unbolt your drive shaft, then remove the bolts holding the third member and pull it out. These are just general instructions however.

Yes, changing the gears only involves the rear differential and the front IFS section(not the cv joints). You can save a lot of costs in labor by removing the rear 3rd member and front IFS section and take them into a shop to do teh work(known as Bench Labor). Figure roughly about 1.5hrs/diff to set up new gears, so about $300(labor at $75/hr), plus about another $5-600(gears, bearings, etc.), wheras if you drive it into a shop it could cost you $1k in labor alone. Or you can usually find oem 4.88 diffs(when available ) for about $2-300 ea.

You should get in touch w/Billydkid, and see when he is planning on regearing. If you live close to each other, his 4.87's would be perfect for your 31's and he could use your 4.10 diffs to regear to 5.29's to run bigger tires.

Well, mine is 4x4 and has stock size 31's, and i'm assuming the stock gear ratio.

If the rig came stock w/31's it would have 4.87 gears, and the door code would be G14, and the 4.56 gears would be G25, or possiblyG28 for 4.30 gears depending on the truck or 4-Runner. My 5sp 3.0 X-cab was never that slow compared to my 2wd 22r, and from what I remember wasn't as slow as my sisters '95 auto Runner.

If you don't have factory 4.87 gears for the 31's intalling them will bring the truck back to factory tire to gear ratio, however I would recommend installing the the 5.29 gear set. The 5.29's gears should work better for the 4-spd tranny, if it is geared a little to high you could install a set of 32" tires.

When the 3.0 engine was introduced it wasn't slow at all compared to its domestic counterparts that gad a v-6 engine, and was likely de-tuned for the truck since the camry engine from the same era had a much higher hp output. Also when the engine was introduced in '88-89, consumers weren't after fast trucks, not even full sized v-8 rigs were being sold as performance vehicles.

There are mods you can do to helpo it perform better, but they are not cheap. I would open up intake, and rework the exhaust(under $500) Other upgrades include the ignition and geaders(looking at about $1500), though regearing would be your best bang for the buck.

Everything that he listed above is just about right. ive added headers, exhaust, and a k&n intake. the truck isn't much faster, but i have gotten an 18.8 quarter mile out of mine, but that was really, really pushin. next on my list are an ignition system and an electric fan, but he is right. your best bet would be to regear.
