Hey Everyone,

I know I remember hearing that if you have a Black Ring of Residue on the tip of your exhaust pipe. There might be something wrong with your engine???

Is this something I should be worried about? I have been getting terrible gas mileage and the gas prices now are killing me. I get about 230 miles on the 21 Gallon Tank!!! Its over $60 per fillup.

If your truck is carbed than it sounds like your running rich, if your EFI than you can have a stuck injector. I may be wau off when it comes to these imports. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/lol.gif" alt="" />

Another likely cause of your problem is an issue with your O2 sensor. On your vehicle, the O2 sensor provides information to the ECM (computer) that the ECM uses to determine the proper fuel to air mixture.

By any chance to you have a check engine light showing?

No, The CEL is not on. It has been like this for a while, and the recent spike in gas prices has made me wonder if its spray too much fuel in the engine that isn't needed....

Even with all your mods you should be getting closer to 15 mpg...heck I got 16 mpg @ 75 mph on the way to Moab in a lifted Trooper w/35" tires...

The black ring thing, I doubt if that means anything. My old 99 Trooper did that even when it ran perfect, and it didn't burn oil either.

How's your oil consumption? I had a black ring on my exuast pipe and always assumed it was due to the standard over eating of oil in my 99 Rodeo. My O2 sensor was good and fuel system cleaned regularily and just figured it was carbon from the burning oil...May be your cause.

Running Rich means your engine is getting more fuel than air. A friend of mine had the same thing happend to his bike when he purchased it Im assuming the PO did a rejet and put in a larger main jet that was called for, we reduced the main jet by one size and problem fixed. as far as I know these carbs have mixture screws but I think that only affects idle mixture but It can help turning it down a lil, I have seen these vibrate loose in a boat and ricjened the mixture causing our boat too dround in fuel.

Running rich means the air-to-fuel ratio is less than the "ideal" 14.7:1... but you are still likely getting at least 14 times as much air as you are fuel.

In a 2000 model, he has a fairly sophiticated fuel injection system, not a carb (see his signature).
