Need a Spot
HI there, I've had a 93 Amigo 2.3 hangin out in my driveway for years now - it needs a lower end kit, just haven't gotten around to rebuilding. My query is this - is there an inexpensive diesel engine I can replace this with and then convert to biodiesel? It will just be a city-runner, and gas is starting to eat my lunch with my 94 4runner. I know there are also electric kits available, but my concern was with the smaller engine, plus the kit's not cheap. Any advice on the subject would be great too, thanks! JT

Hello, and welcome!

I am just going to key off a word you used - inexpensive. No anytime you do a conversion there is considerable amount of time and money involved in getting everything to work right. If you have a thick wallet you can do anything. If you are on a budget pick up a decent used Trooper or if Bio Diesel is the main interest pick up a Benz W123.

Thank you. I checked out the engines for the w123 and couldn't find any for sale currently - the car evidently has a rather large fan base. I also ran across the website "biodiesel.info.cc". Then found a Datsun truck on ebay with 2 isuzu diesel engines for $450. Shame I dont live near Oregon <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif" alt="" /> . Then there's the issue of procuring or producing fuel... but it all gives me a good place to start. I think I'll have a lot of reading to do before I make any purchases. Thanks again.

For an idea of what is involved in an Isuzu diesel re-power, see the link in my signature. Not an easy process, but it is definitely possible.

If you are energetic and young, you don't need a lot of cash, better have a well equipped shop though, and plenty of time, you'll be doing some cutting and welding too. I spent hundreds of hours which probably cost me my first marriage swapping diesel to gasser. It is no small undertaking. I saw an neat Canadian site http://www.canev.com/Jeep.html where they do EV from fossil fuel conversions and had a few diesel engines left over so they installed them in gassers. Quality craftsmanship just like Acy's
