ok im a speed freak and this is wierd but im selling my camaro and looking for a jeep. mostly because i want something equally as easy to find parts for but can take a full on beatdown under any condition. i have seen 2 cherokees that caught my attention. mostly because they are the slant six, 4x4, and 5speed. i think that the stock height isnt bad, but a little more travel would be cool and anything to increase power. im more of the baja racer type then rock crawler and where i live offroad is few and far between but bad weather is common. i also respond to my fire company in any weather and high hp camaro + snow isnt that fun. just looking for a few tips on what to look for then how to make it more fun.
both jeeps are over 100k on the clock. if the 4.0 six in them is anything like the old school slant six im not to worried. my buddy had a 200k /6 in his duster with 8 bent pushrods and still ran good.

MOPAR hasn't built a true slant 6 in many years.. Yes they were long lasting engines for their time.
The 4.0 is a far superior STRAIGHT 6. It is fuel injected with a computer running everything. You can't go wrong with a 100K 4.0.
If you are going to keep it on the street I'd leave the height and tire size all stock. It will perform better on the street in stock form. You will have better power, milage and handling as it comes from the factory.
Just clamp on your gumballs and go for it.

man I am a inline 6 fan for sure. The 4.0 motor is probably the greatest of them because it has all of the great things the 225 slant 6 and the 258 4.2 had. plus like he said computer controlled, and fuel injected. I have put over 200k miles on all of the 4.0 motors i have had and no complaints.. easy on the high revving you can break a flexplate and around 200k you will probably need main bearings. thats about it.. oh and about the better ride and fuel economy from factory i disagree with. both times i have built a XJ I have gotten better ride and gas mileage. mainly because of lift and gear choice. rustys offroad 4 1/2" kit with springs instead of AAL made my XJ ride great with 32" BFG m/t. I put 4.10 gears in and got 18mpgs highway. I then installed a K&N cool air intake with 8" filter. Bought a flowmaster exhaust kit from rustys for $100 bucks and the throttle response and gas mileage were great. It pulled alot harder from 3500 to 5500 rpms. and in the end I ended up getting 20mpg highway..
