Getting the Wheeling Fever
199422RE 4WD 205,000 miles.I flushed and filled my radiator months ago. Burped it well on an incline. My truck thermometer always says it is running cool, but it seems to go through my overflow resevoir of water/antifreeze every two or three weeks. I changed my cap with factory part, changed my thermostat, (checked in boiling water first on the stove), changed my coolant sensor. When I drive it, and stop and park. I can smell a little antifreeze. No steam escaping, and it will burp at me. Then nothing, as if the pressure has to build up again then burp at me again. It sounds as if you put a drinking straw under water and blew real hard for 2 seconds. the sound is coming from within the radiator. If my resevoir is full I can hear air bubbled bubbling off into the fluid in the resevoir too. Any ideas, thoughts, Thanks.....ADAMan

Any coolant in the oil, oil in the coolant? Could be the headgasket leaking and pressurizing the coolant system. They make a chemical test you can use to see if combustion gasses are mixing with your coolant.

Not that I know of. Change oil regular, no oil loss, none burned off. When it comes out it appears to be all oil. Any more on the "test" available locally at normal parts houses?

You might want to have the cooling system pressure tested. See if the pressure inside rises and falls with engine RPM. Or have a chemical test done on the coolant to check for exhaust gas contamination (I think NAPA carries a test kit for ~25.00).

Does the coolant in the overflow smell like exhaust?

Yep, NAPA carries the kit as 4Crawler mentioned. Follow the instructions. Combine that with a pressure test.

Take some coolant out of the overflow and place in a clear jar. If theres oil in it, it will appear slightly muddy. If you let it sit long enough the oil and coolant will separate. I have a hg leak but it never caused a overheating problem..... yet <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/zombie.gif" alt="" />

>>>*I would agree with some of the other posts here. This describes a head gasket leaking combustion into the coolant.

This can happen without evidence of coolant into the oil or the reverse, although rare it does happen.

It will create an air pocket of higher pressure than the surrounding liquid. The sound is the pressure releasing, moving suddenly upwards, and will normally seem to come from the radiator.

When the engine is running, heat energy is added and the motion of the coolant can stop the noise, so often it will only demonstrate after the engine is shut off. The odor of antifreeze tends to confirm......*EB

Thanks for all the infomation. I appreciate it. Will a leaky head gasket, cause a weak point and be more apt to blow under high RPM or load. With the miles on the truck, I really baby it for fear of head gasket issues. I have blown a few before, (on other trucks). I rarely get above 65 mph and watch my temp like a hawk. Thanks again.......ADAMan

Yes, it can. All the HG leaks I have had on my 22RE have been exhaust->coolant leaks, typically only showed up under high loads. Why? High engine load = high combustion pressures = more pressure to force exhaust gas from the cylinder to a coolant passage between the head and block. Would usually notice a reduction in heater output at highway speeds or up hills plus the gurgling/whooshing sound of the exhaust gas bubbles going through the heater core. Usually would see no temperature gauge rise unless the coolant level got low enough.
