Do you have a block heater yet? Makes a HUGE difference to cold weather starting. I mean an unbelievable difference.

You can easily test your glow plugs with an ohmmeter. POCUK has info there on what the resistances should be. Also, cleaning the busbar can help deliver more power to the plugs.
