Hmm, I wonder if it would be easier to get a full 3.0 24V DOHC from one of the cars and swap it. Any idea on the sensors and wiring harness?

Here's the executive summary from this way... My first Monty was a 95 SR. Then from that to the puny 3.0 12V in a 92. (No offense to those that have them.) The 95 SR drove great, and I'd take another in a second myself. I'll deal with the butterfly for the additional HP.

But... I am a fool for the hand-shaker tranny. That's why I searched hard and waited long, until I found my current 95 down in South Carolina three years ago.

So at 140k+ miles now, I'm trying to look ahead to the day when some sort of measurable effort will be needed on the engine, and then decide just what to do about it.

Take the SWB as a metaphorical example. The motor was worn out. I got a Quest for a good enough price that when I scavenged off the parts I needed for the turbo swap, I was nearly whole after parting our the rest. So for the additional effort of the minimal fabbing, I was not measurably worse for the wallet to go turbo on it.

My motor is fine overall though. Just some occasional smoke and oil consumption that seems consistent with valve guide seals. So in that regard, it would seemingly make sense to rehab a different set of heads and fit them if possible, and not swap out the whole thing.

If only I had the time, skill, and money to do a VR4. Well, enough of the time and money would offset a shortfall in the third area.

Very close to your existing setup. They will not be much issue. Sensors are in different locations but the functions are the same.

The small internal water passage is to cool the divider between the exhaust valves.

Thanks - I need to find out if the small passage can connect correctly to the 12v SOHC block if DOHC head gaskets are used.

Now that I look more closely, it may be that the DOHC Cometic head gaskets can be used on the 12v SOHC engines. Cometic said not, but then ARP said they didn't have any head studs for a 12v SOHC 3.0L.

I need a bigger parts store so I can catalog things and look at/measure them every time a light bulb goes on. Let's see...... 5 engine stands complete with engines should do the trick... + one more for what's under construction

Only one? You clearly have the time to be able to get through a whole project before moving on to the next one.
Dang, I need 5 stands for the engines in process. And I am a chassis guy, not an engine guy. I only have engines cause chassis are real boring without an engine. Kind of why I buy JDM engines, I can just put them in and drive.

Yes - I don't do this for a living - I'd starve if I tried it. Also, I only have one truck.... so I can only blow up one engine at a time.

Wow guys, what a great board with so much knowledge and willing to share too! Thank you all so very much. I even know of a good 3.0 from a 94 cheap. Maybe that will get it on the road for a comfortable winter driver, with the 3500 getting the shop time it deserves.I have an empty engine stand(only because of the rest stacked on racking)(U know, Red Green and the cylinder index of manliness.)BTW JDM engines?-I Don't recall that one.

The 94 3.0 is the SOHC 12V. Per the comments above, it is quite different from the 3.5. Don't know if you can easily put it in. Also, assuming you were driving the 3.5 before it went out, you may not be happy with the 3.0 12V and its 153HP.

again, I just knows what I read here...JDM is "japanese domestic market". They import engines from japan. These rngines are usually 50000 miles or so, and are sold here because of the emmisions laws over there...I think.

if Colt said you can get one cheap, believe it.
I have seen them on ebay.

There is also a California outfit "MSrecylers" or something

Update-Well what I've found and done so far- loose timing belt due to tensioner bushing wear(installed backwards too).Wrong spark plugs.(no compression test, belt off)One butterfly broken off rod, 1/3 of it remaining in center rh intake port. Cut butterfly shaft and re-assembled engine. Runs rough and SMOKES like a mosquito fogger truck. All pcv's are open, hand over oil fill when running, no apparent blow by issues, just smokes like a hole in piston-white not blue,no anti freeze smell or loss but really burns the eyes.
So if I got it right, an 02 Galant 3.8 block with my 3.5 heads is a workable combination. Or should I search for other dohc heads due to piston domes.
