If you make the mistake of buying a Autozone starter(lifetime wrty) like I did you will get plenty of practice getting at those bolts.
good luck Please don't tell me that Advance Auto, actually. I succumbed to temptation and called a mechanic. Oddly enough, he hangs out @ the same bar as me. Hmmmm... Maybe I can use the Advance starter as a stopgap until I can rebuild the stock one.

A 2" body lift helps at getting to it from underneath.

I drop the front of the driveshaft so I can get my arm up in there. That makes a big difference.

Belive it or not. It is easier to remove the starter on the Starion than the Montero.
Besides, Real 2.6 owners have scars from thier wrists to thier elbows.
Well on my way to becoming that eccentric old man in every town.(crazy as a s#@thouse rat) With a yard full of desireable old vehicles that tells you, Sorry they're not for sale..... Someday I'm going to fix them.

Besides, Real 2.6 owners have scars from thier wrists to thier elbows. ...and their head...and their back...and their hootus... [color:"yellow"] Bwwwwaaaahaahhaaaa!!! [/color] True, true. But am I the only one that find the removal of the starter to be not a biggy? Last time I changed mine I did it in about 45 minutes, really!!! I used a couple of extensions with a wobbly at the end for the top bolt. I find a lot easier to work on it from the bottom and if you want more free space then drop the front shaft. Don't give up A couple of will keep you happy and will keep our knuckles numbed Javy
