I have finally decided on a solution for storing all my recovery gear and stuff that I would like to always have with me (in the truck). I use the back of the truck for work on a daily basis, and often have aggregates dumped into the bed....so I needed to keep it open and available. The girlfriend and I also sleep in the bed of the truck when we camp.
Whenever I wanted to hit the trails, it was a royal pain in the because I would have to head home first, load up the truck, then hit the trails. Now I have my tug straps, spare, high lift, shovel and 4 ft pry bar all stored and locked on my tiny roof, so I can head out on a whim. I also have other gear behind my front seat.
It's a Surco rack, $200 plus $200 for the vertical Yakima pieces over the bed. Watch out....these Surco racks claim to hold 350 pounds, but I wouldn't trust the rating. With the Yakima cross bar along the back it has totally improved it's weight handling. The Surco rack itself is a good price, but then they get you on all the accesories like the high lift mount, shovel mount, and tire holder...mucho $!
Here are a few pics, please lemme know what you think, and give me any feedback that could improve it!
