Getting the Wheeling Fever
|
I've never seen or heard of a trooper xs, other than mine. I've had the vehicle for almost 2 years now and I have found the following (way cool) options: about a month ago I was looking under the bumper and there is a factory winch mount under there, but there is no circuitry associated with a winch. I also noticed that the engine (2.8 v6) has what appears to be a factory oil cooler. The option code tag doesn't list these items. The id tag on the door pillar gives tire info for 2 sizes: p235/75/r15 and 31x10.5. The vehicle is a manual transmision with crank windows, cloth interior, solid rear seat, but the exterior has chrome bumpers/accents, and appears pretty basic as far as amenities. Does anybody know what else I may have with the xs model? Is this a rare configuration? thanks, -steve

To my knowledge, there never was a factory winch mount option. I'd say that most likely it's something a previous owner put on there.
There are some with a factory oil cooler for the 2.8 v6. The Trooper that I had didn't have that option installed, but some did.
Stock size tire for the majority of them was 235/75/r15 and they came with 4.56 gears. Optional package was the "big tire package" and it came with 31x10.50x15 tires and 4.77 gears.

I know the guy who bought this trooper new (he also got an automatic LS version 2 weeks later back in 1991). He lives across the street where I grew up. I know that he didn't put a winch mount on there... the mount is inside the front bumper, connects to the bumper mounts and has an additional flat bar in the middle that connects it to the middle front end of the frame. It is so well placed that I didn't even notice it until about a month or so ago. I have since looked at all the Troopers that I come across and I have never seen anything like this.

I have an '89 Trooper XS. It has the 2.6 engine, and is pretty basic. It has no winch bumper and no oil cooler, but it does have chrome bumpers. The windows are hand crank. The door tag lists only one tire size.
It also has an aftermarket AMC head. The original head, a number 4 casting, just didn't hold up. Look at my photos for the head damage.
