Getting the Wheeling Fever
Hi all, been some time since I posted last. Previously I had been searching for a motor/tranny for a Trooper conversion. Jarco ended up getting me a 4JG2; mechanical inj with AT. Should be here next month. I noticed on a separate thread that there is one for sale here in WA, funny the timing of that. I would have bought that if only I hadn't already commited to this one.

Sounds like there are others now doing the same conversion now. Good to hear.

When I get the motor I'll start documenting my progress like Adrian did.

My one question I have at this point is timing belt part number and source. I understand that the 4JG2's came with either square or round tooth belts. Does anyone have the part numbers for each of those as well as a source for them? I haven't had any luck in my searching so far. I'd like to get one, well one of each, ahead of time so I can change that before I install the motor.

Thanks!

Paul

It should be a Gates T844 belt. I would think that you could get that in the US. I got a T966 for my Bighorn, but it was a special order item from the US through NAPA.

4bt Swaps (dot) com is a good potential source of info; the site is primarily Cummins 4bt related, but there is plenty of discussion on the Isuzu page, too.

Now that is interesting - I was under the impression that I had to order belts from overseas. I managed to get two of them from a guy who abandoned a similar conversion project in Kansas. However, I never thought to call Napa... I will try them when the time comes.

Any idea as to the shelf life of a timing belt, anyway? My spare will likely sit in the basement for quite a while before it's needed, and I've no idea how long it sat before I acquired it.

According to Gates Website:

"Gates is the only manufacturer approved by virtually every major OEM to provide timing belts for new engines."

I'm still waiting for delivery of it from Japan, about 3 weeks out now. It's out of a '92 or '94 Bighorn - about 70K miles on it. What else would you like to know?

Thanks for the replies on the timing belts. I tried Napa and didn't have much luck. I would like to stick with Gates, I don't know if the hype is all true, but I'm willing to buy in on it to preserve the motor. I'll try the web site suggested and see if I have any luck there.

Some info I've found, don't know if it's going to be useful yet though. I found the European Gates cataloge that lists a part number for my application. I'm confused that it's different than the T844 number though; 5306 is PN they list. I'm going to see if my local Gates dealer can get that PN as they haven't had luck with T844.

If anyone wants to check out the cataloge:
1) go to http://www.gates.com/Europe/
2) find the link to 'catalogue' under Automotive products
3) Click on Online automotive application catalogue

Useful info for non-US products.

I'll keep everyone posted how my effert goes buying one here in the US. My last resort is to contact co-workers in UK and have them buy one (some) and send them to me. We'll see...

Thanks again for all the info.

Paul
