Getting the Wheeling Fever

Well, I am attempting to breath some life back into a 94 XJ. I bought it recently with 126,000 miles. It runs and drives great but there are a couple issues. I, of course, changed all fluids, put on new tires, checked plugs/wires/cap, changed all hoses, new air filter, new heater control valve, new fan clutch, new fuel filter, cleaned carb, oiled all hinges locks, etc. The two problems I need to look at are the engine sounds loud when warmed up like clacking lifters. It sounds tight and quiet when cold. Normal?? Can the valves be adjusted on the 2.5? Thicker oil? The other problem was when cruising a dirt road in four wheel high in second gear I heard and felt a hard "kunk" "kunk" sound from the trans case?? I'm most concerned with the first problem right now as I can go without four wheel for a while. I want to make this Jeep my daily so I want it in good working order. Thanks for any help. D.

The valve adjustment is a slightly LONGER pushrod...the dealer will have them and know the correct length to sell you. A "klunk" could be a loose or broken tranny mount.. Prolly not inside the transfer case. Big JIm

Are the noisy rocker arms normal for this motor with this amount of miles? Should I not worry about it? On the Kunk sound, it definately felt like when a chain slips on a sprocket. Thats the best way to describe it. It happened when I put more load on it too.

There are a few things that might make such a clunk.. Of course the springs, shackles and u-joints must be checked also. But the chain inside the transfer case slipping in such a way is a thing I have never heard of.. not like that anyway. Big JIm

What should I look for on the springs shackles and U-joints. I did grab the rear drive shaft, yanked and rotated it and it felt tight. The front had a degree or two of rotation but very slight. How do you tell if a U-joint or shackle or spring is bad? Also, does the noisy rockers sound normal for 126,000 miles? Thanks alot. D.

Anyone? I'd like to try to make some headway this weekend. My knowledge is pretty weak on 4wds so any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks. Dave

Ok, I used the lug wrench to pry between the cross member and the mount and I was able to lift the tranny 1/4-3/8 of an inch. It "looks" ok but but how do you know for sure if the mount is bad? Should it not lift at all or is a little ok?

hmmm I've never used a pry bar. I always use a jack.. 3/6 is too much.. It should be too tight to move by hand. Big Jim

Yeah. I'll bet that if you look at the mount, it will look dry rotted and crumbly. Time to go to urethane.
