I was rolling down the autobahn early Friday morning, just cruising at 80-85 mph. Everything was going alright, then I noticed the heater got suddenly cold.
Scheise!
Pulled over, shut it off. Popped the hood, all the coolant was in the overflow, nothing in the radiator. I threw some fluids in the radiator, fired it back up, and it sputtered on 2 cyl, then 3 cyl, finally roaring to 4 cyl at about 3,000 rpm. I looked back and saw the huge plume of sickly sweet smoke from the tailpipe, and shut it back down.
Called ADAC, got towed to the nearest base with an auto craft shop, and got a rental for the rest of the trip.
This will be my third head gasket. I never even overheated the engine, either. Now I must decide what to do... Should I order another gasket, put the engine back together, and roll again, or should I put my feelers out for a wrecked Hilux on the cheap with a 2LT for a diesel swap? I'd still replace the head gasket, run the engine a bit, film the engine running strong, then sell it in the Stars and Stripes classifieds.
Now, for the questions...
I have an "EB'd" 22RE. Will the 2LT give me the same smile when hauling down the autobahn at 100+ mph, or do I need to find a different engine?
If I need a different engine, which one would you go with, and why (remember, I am on a TIGHT budget here, thus the 2LT thoughts)?

BTW: After quick searching, I *think* if I play this right, I might be able to locate a wrecked 4Runner (KZN130) with a 1KZ-TE. A much better choice in my book, but locating the right vehicle for the right price will be difficult.
The only ones I have found so far are in the UK.

2lt has some problems of it's own mostly overheating and cracking heads. I'd look for a 1kz or stick with the 22re. The 2lt diesel isn't a race winner by any means although the 1kz seems to be decient.

Toyots Diesel has a bunch of good information on various diesels. 1KZ and newer engines is the way I'd go. From what I gathered the *LT engines are less HP but same or more torque than similar year ??R* gas engines. A *KZ swap is much more involved and will require new motor mounts, etc. but will have better fuel mileage and power for acceleration and hauling. I briefly looked at what it would take to do one here states side. Decided to stick with my 22RE for cost reasons. I'd have used a front clip for my conversion rather than a wrecked vehicle. It would be about $5000 for the front clip.

Repair it, drive it and than look for another. As you found the market in Germany isn't that big, but from time to time something pops up. Like my current 4R, it's from Germany too. And if you want to drive with speeds of 100+mph, don't get a 2L-3L or similar. (I know from experience ) At least a 1KZ-TE or a gasser.

What kind of mileage do you get at 100mph plus? i've topped mine out at 105mph (downhill)... can yours do this easily? I'd say a nice big turbodiesel six would be pretty killer... or a supra swap like the last poster?

Mileage?
Uhh... Low teens at best. 16-18 mpg from 70-90, and low to mid 20's from 40-50.
