Ah, that makes it more clear.

The easy answer is to replace the hubs with manual hubs. Superwinch or used Isuzu Asin ones. The AUTO hubs are just not worth rebuilding or replacing. Once they start acting up, they seem to give nothing but headaches.

As for how they work, when you shift into 4wd, the front axles spin. This causes the the hubs to engage. This torque keeps the hubs engaged. It is also why they unlock before they lock again when you put it in reverse. And, it is why you have to back up a bit when you take it out of 4wd. Releaving that torque allows the hubs to release.

Manual hubs are stronger and frankly, more reliable. When you need them, you just lock them in and then shift in/out of 4wd as needed. For on-road use, when the conditions do not warrant 4wd, you can then unlock them. But, when they are locked in and you are in 4wd, there is no lock/unlock going on. They are locked 100% of the time.

For hubs, you might want to call Matt at Independent4x and see if he has any.

Good Luck,
Michael
