I finally broke down and measured the blocks. I think the measurements agree with what you all have been telling me. I measured the two lowest bellhousing bolts on each. I assume that is correct.

The '80 Colt is 13.25, and the '85 Montero is 12.25. That leaves me right where I started. I don't have a spare engine handy I can drop into the Montero. I'll have to drop the pan and see what damage was done, whether its repairable.

In the event I have to hunt for another engine, will any 12.25 engine work? Or does it have to be/have been mated to an auto transmission?
