They're dayem lucky they didn't suck any gulls. That would've been plain ugly, like the Ramstein Air Show with the Italians.
Was at an air show in Cleveland several years ago; the T'birds were there; still had T38's. One crashed as they were leaving; sucked a bunch of gulls. Same year, the team followed the lead into the ground during a practice sortie.
That's why the Tbirds are in F16's. All Navy carrier aircraft have two engines for that reason! One of my favorite photos of all time Thunderbird punch out

All Navy carrier aircraft have two engines for that reason! A bird can destroy a lot more than an engine. Many a time, not only did we have to replace engines because of bird-strikes, but also leading-edge slats/flaps, stabilators, and canopies. A bird-strike in the center of the windscreen can mean an immediate pilot-fatality. Oh, by the way...the F-35 JSF...single-engine. EDIT: Forgot to mention...AV-8B...also single-engine.

I struck a bird with a Cessna 172 many years ago, hit the left wing just out board of the lift strut. It was right between two ribs and flattened the leading edge. Sure took some lift off that wing and the plane was about 4 knots slower till I got back home. Since I was the mechanic at the airport I ended working pretty late so the plane would be on line the next day.

I'm just old school.

Agreed. One of the primary requirements for a Navy Jet has been multiple engines. It's not like you can glide down and land it on a street/field/freeway in the Med or in the IO if you loose an engine.

The Navy is not so worried because it has it's own "Sleath" aircraft called the "Super Hornet" I don't know how they did it but they have a whole new jet and it's about F-14 size http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_HornetF-35 cockpit runs on LINUX ![[Linked Image]](http://www.codeonemagazine.com/archives/2006/articles/apr_06/front-office/images/f35interface_01.jpg)

Oh, I don't disagree. For years Naval aircraft have mostly been multi-engined aircraft for the reasons you mentioned and I think going to a single-engine fighter isn't in keeping with that tradition.
I'm just saying that's what's happening.

Slingshotting a 'stealth' aircraft off a carrier. Am I the only one who sees the humor?

I missed the fun on this one. They're now part of my old AFSC, in addition to the F-117.
