is there anything i can do to stop the oil use. the tail pipe stays black while in town but goes light grey when i go on a long road trip. is there anything that i can replace in the motor to help this. sorry if there is a post already on line but i couldn't find it. any info would be helpful. ps. what is the best oil that i should use in this truck. using penzoil 10w-30 now. thanks srf.

There were plenty of threads about the oil consumption here.

1Qt per 3000 miles sounds normal for this engine. Just check the oil level often.

I personally use 0W-40 Mobil1 to control the consumption. Others report that Rotella heavy-duty (or synthetic) is the best oil in terms of consumption. But in your situation there is nothing to worry about if you keep the level between the marks.

I agree. I have seen brand new cars that use that much and the dealer said it is normal. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.

try using a sea foam engine cleaner available at most napa parts stores. disconnect your brake boost line from master cylinder and poor half a can down that tube. pouring the fluid is the key though don't stick the vacuum hose into the cleaner or you may get a vapour lock. the other half of the can poor into your crank case. after about 100km change the oil. do this a couple of times and it should solve your issue. mine worked on a 99rodeo! hope it helps
