Howdy folks! Got an issue that seems like it will not be as easy to solve as I was hoping.

I've got a strong jerk when going into reverse. It will not do it all the time, and you can replicate it when it does it. At first I thought it was the short carrier bearing, so 140 dollar part later I find out that its not, doh.

Just swapped both engine mounts today, also shot, and also, did not solve problem, so I'm figuring its the transmission

It feels like there's play in something, though can't figure out what. This is a 2wd 1999 with 160k miles. It works flawlessly, and aside from this jerk into reverse, it has ZERO shifting problems

Anyone got any ideas? I'm checking out used transmissions on ebay and they're around 300-700 bucks..

Also, would a trans from a 97-98 fit a 99? I don't see why not...?

Thanks for any responses!

have you flushed the trans?
Is the fluid red? is it mitus fluid?
ive know thoses to have a torque conveter shutter but its more noticeable with light load and light on the gas
if it shifts fine i wouldnt replace it
anyhow i see a lot of noises and such when backing up to be rear brakes might be worth it to give them a look <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/kewl.gif" alt="" />

Once again I have to remind everyone including myself- work to eliminate causes starting with inexpensive or easy to find/fix. I would recommend jacking up the rear and spin tires / driveshaft. Check for u joints, brakes, bearings, especially pinion bearings. Also check output bushing at transmission / tcase(not quite sure how your internals look, just check for excess lateral play on front driveshaft yoke.Front pinions with crush washers can be re-tightened a little if play there is excessive. Five minutes of looking can save alot of money or headaches later. First try it in neutral, then 4x4(with all wheels jacked), then park, drive, just to see if something seems odd or excessive. That little "feel" will give you a baseline test for next time diagnosing when broke on a trail. Good luck.
