The damn thing got stuck at normal temp when one of the aux. coolant hoses busted. I don't know how long I was driving with an over temped engine, but when I finally noticed smoke I flicked the dash and the gauge swung up to "melt down" level. A long tow and one head gasket later I was back on road.
