Was gonna do a 3 inch suspension lift when I get my new rig and was wondering if a diff drop is necessary or would I be fine without?

Darlington is no longer in business; so you'd need to either find a used kit for sale, make your own, or have a fab shop/buddy who can weld make it for you. As to whether or not its 'necessary', no, plenty of lifted 'Zus do not have them so its not necessary. Depending on what year and model your truck is, though, it is certainly a good idea. You didn't state the year and model; so I can't really comment specifically on that.

Actually Joe still does a little work on the side, I got ahold of him through Jerry Lemond and he made some drop brackets for me. But they are not rocket science and can be made by anyone with modest fab skills.
If you go off road with any seriousness I would consider it, but really they just make your CVs stronger and more durable. No additional capability is added by the drop brackets.

The diff drop kit makes your CVs more reliable. But it takes at least 1.5" of front ground clearance under the cross-member - this is an expected consequence, but still this is unfortunate. Also, my observation is that it makes the cross-member weaker. It could be designed better, but it would cost much more $$$. I use the kit and I think I am fine with it.

This is true, but I was talking about the particular Darlington's kit. Your vehicle is a Trooper - it has better stock front cross-member from the start (with a nice recession in the middle).

Darlington is no longer in business... Actually I am still in Buiness, just needed a break due to my Air Force Job. I will be re-doing the website real soon. In the meantime, you can send me a PM or email me for pricing and payment details
Joe A little old lady once asked me why I have those big heavy bumpers on my truck, I responded "if I bump into something, I win!!" "BTW, I did bump into a Chev Minvan at about 30 MPH...it lost!"

This is great. Your diff drop kit is a cool product. You have a monopoly <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
