Will my 5 speed hold up to a turbo

Mine did not, and I don't recommend it. They seem weak behing a carb motor. Late model parts from 88-89 starion may solve the tranny problems. Others may have specific parts.

The turbo motor is such a good match to the a/t that it's spooky. The loose converter lets the engine get into boost with almost no lag off the line, and mine was at full boost by 2700 with a stock 12A turbo. I drove both the 5spd and the a/t, and I'll tell you straight that the a/t is a lot faster. I also prefer it offroad for it's soft driveline touch. You lose some tranny control, and the positive engine braking in the creepies, but I have not found this to be a handicap. I don't rock crawl much, though. And with stock gearing, the engine is moving too slow for much compression braking, anyway. May be a diff story with tcase gears and 5.29's, but I haven't been there, yet, and on the road, even with fat tires, the turbo shrugs off the overall ratio change with torque. Imagine passing uphill on 31's without drama or a downshift...
