From living in snow country before we were told NEVER use the e-brake when it is extremely cold as freezing water can bind up the park brake and not allow it to release completely.
Sounds like some dragging brakes would heat things up enough to unstick anything frozen?
If the cables really ice up they won't want to release even though you're turning the wheels against them. I was a servce manager in the Sierra Nevadas and that came from the manufacturers. I didn't encounter a problem but took a few phone calls from people that did & that advice stopped their concerns. If the roads are icy you don't want your brakes unpreditable. One time I came out of a pizza place and heard this cussing on the other side of my Raider. I went around to see what had happened and this guy was trying to get into his 4X4 (off brand - not a Monty or Raider). His outer door latches had frozen and he'd pulled so hard on it his feet gave way on the icy pavement and he slid 1/2 - 2/3 the way under his car with just his shoulders and upper torso showing. I yanked him up, he was angry, embarrassed, and had had a few and was still cussing when we got his door open. I've laughed about that more than a few times.
Don't want to mess with the icy stuff too much.
Another time I was on 395 in my Raider and hit black ice at about 40 MPH going in a straight line. It spun 2 or 3 times then went sideways off the road and down an enbankment about 60 feet just missing going into a deep drainage culvert by another 25 feet or so. When the Raider went off the road onto the ground it/we were spinning sideways and the change of surfaces hit the side of the tires knocking 3 of them off the rim by breaking the seal at the rim.
I got out and walked around the Raider. It had bent the mudflaps only. I put it into reverse and backed up onto the road where I took the tires off, got a ride to the nearest town - aired up my tires and put them back on - then drove very carefully back home. That one was cammed with a Weber and a few other goodies.
That truck and how it performed is almost legendary to me (including two vans hitting it in the rear, paint marks on my rear bumper - they were towed )! I was always sorry I'd let it go and that's why I bought the 90 SWB. It's been in the shop for 9 months getting everything from engine, locker, to paint. It's promised this month. Next time I'll find someone a little (LOT) quicker.
