Need a Spot

I'm new to the site, so I thought I'd pop in and say hi.

I just purchased a 91 Wrangler (CHEAP) and it needs some work. First and foremost, no forward only reverse - at first I figured a filter change and gasket might fix it (had same issue on a buick a few years back and that fixed it), but then while we were getting it on the trailer we put a quart of tranny fluid in it and it went straight through to the ground. :-(

So big question is what transmission do I have, and what can I replace it with? I've been reading online and all the numbers are glassing my eyes (I'm not a mechanic or mechanical hobbiest yet, if it's not a computer I don't know what I'm looking at....).

How can I tell what type of transmission I have? I found a transmission on craigslist and the price is good, just not sure if it will swap out with mine.

Lots of other little issues, mostly surface rust (no rott) and cosmetics. Engine runs strong when it has good gas.

Thanks!

Ken

Welcome! First off tell us, is it auto or manual? 4 or 6 cylinder? What is the model tranny you found on craigslist? Start from there and I'm sure someone here can answer your questions.

Wow. Forgot to put that in.

Its an automatic. 6Cyl 4.0L High Output engine.

The one I found on CL is an automatic from a 91 cherokee, the guy said he believes its an AW4 and comes with the transfer case (np242) he said he thinks my np231 will bolt to it, but is not sure.

All the AW4, T18, NP numbers remind me of a battleship game so I'm not sure if I'm getting what I need or not.

thanks again

Ken

Welcome KW.. I don't think your Wrangler came with the AW4 in it.. I think it was a 3-speed the 32RH I think is the number.. The AW4 was used in longer vehicles and has shift mechanics that aren't in your ride It is a 4-speed auto. The AW4 is a Longer tranny than the 32RH.
Putting an AW4 in there has been done but it is not a drop in job.
Maybe my old mind is a bit lax this morning but that is what I remember anyway.
