Getting the Wheeling Fever
Has anyone tried one of these to get the spare out of the cargo area? The only thing it seems to be missing is a hinge to fold it down to open the rear hatch. That would be an easy fab. though. hitch spare mount

Never saw one of those in actual use..The rattleing/banging noise of the thing would drive me bonkers. But it would free up space inside on a trail ride.

Body Damage is Cool
It says it is only rated for 100 lbs. So if using it on a trail ride, if your tire weighs i.e. 40lbs...when the rear of the rig comes down off a bump or something, that 40lbs could easily turn into 100+ lbs cause of the downward motion.

It does say a max tire weight of 100 lbs, not a max tire force of 100 lbs, so I would have to believe they are referring to lbm (mass) not lbf (force), which they can't really control. Either way, I agree with Jim, the noise would drive me batty, I spend a fair amount of time eliminating rattles and vibrations in my vehicles, I wouldn't want to intentionally add one.

I don't think it would be a problem. No different than an excess cargo carrier, which plugs into the hitch and I've used plenty. It really doesn't make noise. Maybe mine's just a snug fit w/ all the rust, but I've never heard it bouncing along down the beach...Maybe my tires and radio drown it out.

This thing stands up above the hitch with a 50lb tire in it.. It will jump back and forth and make all kinds of noise..
I have a deer feeder that mounts in my hitch and weighs bout the same.. I have a stiff wire with a turn buckle on it to tie the feeder down and help shut it up..
