New York now has public restrooms that you pay a quarter, and you get to use it for 15 mins. Careful, when time is up the door opens, whether you are done doing your business or not.

Looks like it would be pretty clean, but what about after a few weeks?

Can't get a link to it, but you can yahoo or google NYC first flush.

Who would pay to use a public toilet?

Would you pay to use a public toilet?

I voted yes. It is common practice to have these toilets in cities across Europe and the UK. In Germany and Holland it is polite to pay a few cents to use the toilet at highway rest stops. Like a tip for the person looking after it, who appears to be there all day.

I voted yes but there are social implication. What happens when they are all pay and the people start using "other" locations

I vote yes, assuming what I pay keeps it a clean toilet.

I voted yes, but in a circumstance where I need to use a public restroom, I wouldn't care...just as long as one was available. I don't care if the door pops open. If I ain't done I ain't done, and if I get any flack for public then I'd just blame the city and say I only had one quarter.

Les is right, though. I can see this turning into situations where people who don't want to pay just find another spot. [Linked Image]

Are these the free-standing metal pod-style restrooms? Ask Seattle how those worked out. They spent a couple million to acquire them, and IIRC there was some ongoing fee for a service contract on top of that. And what kind of return did we get for that investment? Tourists with comfortably empty bladders like the brilliantly forward-thinking city leaders had hoped? Nope.

The drug dealers would set up shop on a park bench 10 feet away from one of those pod crappers, and the users would go inside to smoke/shoot up whatever they bought. Supposedly the doors were set to only allow one person in at a time, but hookers had no difficulty taking their johns in there either. The general public could hardly use them because the criminal element had established them as part of their turf.

Then again, Seattle's were free. Maybe charging a quarter will discourage that sort of activity.

And if NY's are as "clean" as Seattle's were, I'd probably roll the dice on a public urination ticket and go whizz in an alley for free.

Yes for me, I'd pay a dollar. Given the current biohazardous toxic waste dumps NY considers public toilets I'd gladly pay to use one not inhabited by a junkie or caringly decorated with human waste and used needles.
Unfortunaly I have to go to downtown a couple times a year for work.
The smell on NY streets in the summertime is overwhelming. I can't imagine people relieving themselves around the corner of every alley could possibly make it smell any worse than the mountains of rotting garbage left on every residential street for a week in the hot sun.

If I was really prairie-doggin' it, I might pay a buck, but it would have to be mighty clean in there for me to pay. I usually maintain enough control over my bowels than I just go at home or at work, but on the few occasions when I've been caught somewhere else around town by a vengeful burrito or whatnot, I've had no difficulty finding a restroom that was free of charge and reasonably clean. But I wouldn't be surprised if that wasn't the case in NYC.
