Brownie, interesting comment; agreed that airing down reduces ground clearance. But, if a less jarring ride and/or more traction is desired, airing down is the thing to do. The four wheeler just has to be a little more thoughtful in selecting his/her route (line) through or over a trail obstacle. Four wheeling requires skills and experiences beyond normal highway driving, don't ya think?

You do bring up a good point Fred...but if you have skill( and wheel trails within reason having only 31's) you should be able to get by without having to air down.

Brownie, I don't know what your trails are like in your part of Texas, But there's got to be a few that're rough enough to consider airing down. BTW, have you ever aired your tires down while four wheeling your CJ? If not, try it.
Personally, I almost always air down my rig's tires for any and all trails just for a pleasant ride offroad. This discussion reminds me of some guys from Washington State with some great built-up Chevy PUs who tagged along with our group in Moab for the Prichet Canyon Trail. When they asked what we were all doing next to our rigs at the start of the trail, it was as if we were speaking a foreign language to them. After they made a few attempts at some waterfalls, it wasn't long before they were asking to borrow some air gages and discussing how low they should lower the air pressure in their tires. The added traction made believers out of those guys!

Airing down with 31's is kinda pointless IMO. 31's don't provide enough EXTRA ground clearance to warrant losing a little clearance when aired down. Just my 2ó

When you are wheeling over a few feet of snow, and your tires are nowhere near the actual ground, airing down is imperative so you float over the snow. This was a very common occurrence back in Northern Idaho where I learned how to wheel. Ground clearance was not an issue, but if you tried to hit it with fully inflated tires you would be stuck in a matter of second. We used to go with a few old CJ's that were stock, a Jeepster commando that was stock, an older bronco with 33's a couple 80's Toyotas running 35's and 2 full size Fords (1 78 F150, and my 79 F150, both running 35's) and the first thing we did every time we got to the wheeling site was air down for a bigger footprint, even the guys in the stock CJ's and the stock Jeepster.

Can't agree with that. The increased traction you get from airing down more than offsets any loss in ground clearance.

BTW, on the sand dunes at the state parks in Michigan, the maximum allowed tire pressure is 15 psi, regardless of tire size. Most vehicles do better aired down to less than that.

The trails we frequent are loose, and hard dirt trails, with a little bit of gravel here and there. The trails that we can conquer with our 31's don't require us to have to air down. The trails that are to knarly for us to conquer will require bigger tires, and lockers. So...we do not air down when wheeling.

Once I get to where I can finally put some 35's on, I will always air down for trails, unless it is just a simple scenic trail.

I can't imagine bouncing around all day on a Jeep trail because I'm too lazy to air down my tires! Brownie, Give it a try this weekend, and get back to us with your thoughts about airing down for your trails.
