Booking flights and getting the best deal? #860880 01/18/08 10:16 AM

I need to book a flight from San Jose on 3/8 to Eagle Co and back on 3/14. The best price I found is $495 via Yahoo Travel.

I also checked priceline.com and travelocity.com where they're even more expensive. Any other travel site's I should check?

If it weren't for the wear, I'd seriously consider driving. It's 16hr one way but I enjoy driving anyway and the total for gas would only be ~400 assuming I'm smart with the skinny pedal.

Any ideas on bringing that total down? Would it be better to wait till later and check again?

TIA. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/cheers.gif" alt="" />

$487.67

I've never heard of them before, but they might be ok. I used to use expedia.com a good bit.

I've found that prices start high a few months out, but decline as the travel date approaches... with the bottom price often about 3 weeks prior to departure.... then increasing as the departure date nears. It can be risky waiting that long, though.

If you're a member, try Sam's Club. They offer travel deals.

Thanks guys.

Frank the cheapest I found was $490 too using yahoo travel.
Rich Sams Club's cheapest fair is $590 but on your suggestion I also checked costco to see if they have travel services and they do but mostly for cruise packages, etc.

Anyone else know of a better price option? I may just drive so I'll have a car there too and total gas cost to there & back will only be $450 or so (based on bay area gas prices). In reality, gas might be cheaper than that.

Typically, the closer to the flight date, the higher the cost...that's how they screw businesses when they have to fly last minute anywhere for work. A flight to Atlanta booked a month in advance is about $240..two days, its around $1000.

I think some airlines may match or beat the online trvel prices?

Not sure though. I haven't paid for a liesure travel flight for years (always use miles), so I can't be 100% on that.

When I book for business, I usually use the online sites to find the flights (easier to use) then build it through our corporate site. But the actual airline flights are almost always cheaper than our corporate rate.

Frontier and US Air will get you to Denver for about $300. There are ground shuttles from DEN to Vail, etc., for about $50 (well, used to be $50 about two years ago). Saves about $150.

Or, fly into SLC on USAir for about $270, rent a car for the week and drive through the San Rafeal Swell and Grand Junction (Moab?) for some scenery. I think Grand Junction to SLC used to take me about 5 hours.

I was gonna say the same thing. What airport are you selecting as flying into?

Heck, during those dates I don't believe I'll be in the UK yet, so if I'm not out of state, fly into Denver and I might be able to drive you to Eagle. I won't be working (after 01/31 I'll be going on a several-month sabbatical) and it's a nice drive. smile

Hey Joe, I think I've seen you on some of the UK sites. You may want to see if anyone would like to get together and go for a drive.

Two trips ago, I took a train from Victoria Station down to Essex and got together with "Tiny Tim" (I'm sure you know the name). He still had the Pajero then, but he has an Evo now. We went "greenlaning" for a few hours. Sent him some dodads like emblems and microfiches to show some appreciation.

Offer someone a set of Aisin's on the board and I'd bet you could get a trip.
