I have suspected the cheapass winches would do fine for part time use. For one of them to reach the final 3 is prolly a bit better than I expected.
My guess is if some of the others that failed little things had not failed so early, it would not have come in 3rd but what is..is!

My thoughts were for the money those little things shouldn't even be a factor in a big name winch.
The whole pupose in a winch is to be ready when you need it.
I wonder how the cheap winch would work in severe weather?

Yeah, I agree with you BJ.

They also did not test them in as ToolM said, extreme weather or conditions. Sure it is probably dusty and hot out in the desert, but what about water resistance? Like in the Top Truck Challenges Tank Trap...those guys sometimes use their winch when it is under water. I wonder how well the cheap ones would fair at that, or being covered in mud, or when it is really cold.

Heck BJ...it's supposed to be 3 degrees for the Packers, Giants game coming up. He's pretty close to there...I would say that is some pretty severe weather. Weather I personally would not like to be in.

I'll counter that Jenson.. I have purchased many items from HF since the late 80's and have had no unusual problems.. Their stuff is scattered all over my shop and even in my truck toolbox. Never had a failure yet that wasn't caused by improper use.
I do admit I use them tools rather than the spensive ones when I need to BEND or otherwise modify a tool.. They are so cheap I feel them to be the expendable tools on my bench.
I use HF air compressors, lectric drills, lectric grinders and many other small tools..
and I LOVE THEIR PRICES!!

I was looking to get into something yesterday and ended up installing some HELLA lights in front of the Jeep. About froze to death. When it warms up a little I'll straiten up the wiring and center the beams.
As far as HF, there tools are OK. Besides tools are meant to break after so much abuse. I did buy some gear wrenches for work from HF. Paid half the price of what they are now back in 05' and still use them every day. Now I see the same set at the local HD and Lowes for twice the price.
