Yes, the Air Flow Meter controls the fuel pump and if you have an intermittent connection in that part of the circuit, the fuel pump can cut in and out as you drive (I had that very same problem). Doing the fuel pump test jumper, as noted above, is one way to troubleshoot that sort of problem:
