Sweet!

But... where's Clay's house? And when's a good time?

I have to do a bit of cleaning around the "wound" and punch myself a few annealment dimples at the edges of the cracks - thinking I might also pick up a little bit of steel for reinforcement. The crack is right where the lower control arm, torsion bar, and frame come together. Awesome job GM!! I went to the meeting. See for yourself on this map:

BLM Map, NW Section

You'll likely have to use the zoom and pan functions to see much, but it looks like they are closing a lot of miles of trails that I've never even seen in the first place. I know it stinks, but at least the BLM invited 4WD people specifically to one of their meetings.

Looks like Martinez is pretty much lost for sure. There's a triple threat of "problems" that have led to this:

1. The private land owners in the canyon have asked the BLM for help in controlling access to the public land, because by allowing/encouraging travel across their own land to get to the BLM land, causes extensive damage to structures/equipment/the waterway, not to mention littering and human waste just from the sheer number of people that now use the area.

2. There is an old Indian dwelling up a ways from the old mill. A guy at the meeting with the BLM says that up until about 15 or so years ago it was complete and undisturbed. Now it's been stripped bare and even dug out to some degree to excavate anything worth carrying out.

3. There's some sort of riparian habitat up in there. Birds.

Bright spots were that they want to increase signage, designate harder trails prominently, some with opening obstacle/portals, so people don't get a mile into, say, Woodpecker, then realize that their Subaru Outlander isn't probably going to look the same when the trail is over. They also mentioned that things like that could be in places they could regularly maintain so people won't be as likely to bypass them. That should cut down a little on trailside left-behind and stripped vehicles.

The comment period for this plan lasts until May 8. You can email or write your thoughts to them about any change, plan or closure and they assured us it would be taken into consideration. We cannot send in any duplicate mailings or petitions, as they only count as one submission. Any response has to be up to you. They also ask that you be very specific about what you write, and be detailed, not just : "Don't close any trails, because that would be bad." Refer to route numbers on the map. Read the entire document stuff if you want and specifically respond to a point they have made for a closure, for example. Make suggestions, like someone asked if Martinez could be gated and accessed by permit, like Bulldog Canyon is. Suggest it officially, they said.

Contact Page

Also, someone asked about adopting trails, and the local person said they were waiting on BLM to get them the documents so they could tell everybody what it take to do so.

Closed trails can be reopened in the future (yeah, right) they said; they just want to get a handle on different things in different areas.

People at the meeting were respectful, but weren't very happy. Lots of red shirts. But only one Montero in the parking lot.

I was there as well, parked up front by mcdowell because I didn't know where the building was & ended up circumnavigating the whole fairground on foot.

It seemed like a lot of the people in attendance didn't grasp the fact that since driving off-trail is automatically illegal, that means that when a route is open it is specifically guaranteed by the managing agency to not cause harm to anything just by existing.

In other words on normal paved roads you have an expectation that corners are safe to drive around, bridges don't just end without warning, the crews that built the road didn't stab spotted owls in the genitalia, and all that such stuff. Designated BLM routes are real roads (because driving off roads is prohibited) and as such have to meet real road guidelines.

I am disappointed that the answer to Martinez is flat out closure. That's waging war on the good people in hopes of disrupting the bad. I think clear unmistakable signage could help, "IF YOU VANDALIZE THE DESERT, THE STATE CLOSES THE DESERT. F%^KING DEAL WITH IT" - no joke, those words exactly - except I'd be in favor of leaving out the censorship on the real signs. I also think if they cut entrance routes to the area down to two, put a large staging area with good, behind plexiglas, large and vivid maps, and gatekeepers right at the staging area - with routes for licensed, and unlicensed vehicles and loosely enforced law keeping such vehicle types off each others' routes entirely. The fines could be steep (this is a real safety issue) and if we're lucky NOT be enough to back-fund the trailheads, but more likely it'll be plenty.

Naturally, this calls for an all-out, all hands on deck Montero (and Chevy Blazer, post-2000 model year) run at Martinez. We may not ever get to go back there again.

I may make a stab at printing the NW part of the map and checking out these trails that are about to be closed. Not just for the experience, but maybe there's some input we could give to BLM about why these particular trails could/should not be closed. Anybody here have experience with the routes that are being proposed? For example, I didn't even know about the two "other" Woodpecker trails, on the west side of the main trail. I only knew about the one we did years ago that's in the Well's Guide, apparently known as "Upper" Woodpecker.

Heck, the map's so detailed, I'll want to make a day or two out of running around in the area just to catch up on what I'd been missing.

i wanted to go but found out last minute and had to work, but i'll be sending my e-mail. I wouldn't mind paying for a pass with gate codes on it, or registering our "club" for access. I think something like that would keep the party guys and dune crowd out so that us wheelers can take care of it and enjoy it for years to come.

First I have to convince Toasty to weld my frame for me! damn I wish I hadn't sold my welder! (not that I'd trust my complete lack of experience on something like a vehicle frame...)

Oh and for Martinez... maybe a good set of rock $lider$ ... umm.. damn we have till july right? when it's 150F in the canyons out there and you get covered in thousands of flies? <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/mrt.gif" alt="" />
