Need a Spot
I am fixing up an '87 Mighty Max 4x4 and working on the brakes. I need a new proportioning valve but the dealer cant help me find one. Does anyone have any ideas where I could get one? Does the montero have the same part?

i had the same issue.only the 4x4 trucks have those valve's.i asume you are talking about the one in the back with the spring that hooks to the rear axle.about the only thing you can do is call junk yard to see if they have any 4x4 dodge d-50 or mitsu mighty max trucks.most of them will have no idea what part you are talking about so just see if they have a 4x4 truck then you can go there to pull it or show them.if you cant find one than post up here again.what area are you from?

More info needed. <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

We have a Raider for parting out. No valve over the rear axle on the Montero/Raider.

exactly monty's don't have it only trucks.it ads more rear brake bias as more lb's are added to the back.kind of a cheap anti lock in a way.the more weight in the back the more it lets the rear brakes work because there is less of a chance of lock up.montys don't have it because you generally wont put as much in the back as a truck.

It's a load sensing valve. When the truck bed is empty and the brakes are applied hard, the bed tends to rise. The valve senses this via the spring, and decreases the brake line pressure to the rear brakes to avoid lockup. With a big load in the back, the bed stays level under heavy braking, so the brake line pressure can be higher to provide more braking power without lockup.

Have you checked to see if one off a Toyota pickup will work?

Gen II Monties have them. No idea if they proportion the same as the p/u.

Probably not since one has disks and other has drums. P/N's of the valves are different. Interesting idea though (visions of a Gen2 rear end on a Max).

Makes sense. I don't even know, admittedly, is the p/u leaf sprung? (I'd guess so.) If it is, maybe the Montero Sport has one? Maybe get a whole locking rear attached to the valve?
