if you have front hubs, unlock them.

and then disconnect rear driveshaft from diff.

if you dont have front hubs, disconnect front driveshaft too.

reason is that you will burn up the seals in the t-case. when the engine is running, it is running power through the tranny and turning the gears in the t-case and slinging oil.

when no input from the engine, and the front and rear driveshaft outputs are turning, no oil is being thrown around and hence, the seals going dry.

for my 90 4runner, toyota says to tow max of around 35 miles.

Yeah if its about 10-20 miles you dont have to unhook the rear d-shaft.
If youre towing it on a road trip, DEFINTATELY do it and tie it up to the frame, you'd be retarded not to.

no no don't tie it up the the frame. Just unbolt the flange from the rear diff and then slide the slip yoke out and put it in the bed.

If you remove the drive shaft from the slip yoke, be sure to mark it with a paint marker. When you go to put it back, you could put it back in "out of phase" and have some bad vibrations.

You'll still have to tie up the other half of the drive shaft. I really see no need to pull it out of the slip.

Why would you need to tie up the short end? Its not gonna be rotating and its not gonna fall out..

Some folks run the slip yoke at the bottom of the shaft, I know I always have. But also it could be a little hard on the shaft/u-joints banging around under the truck when hitting bumps, at least on a long/high speed trip:

I know Marlin recommends disconnecting the rear drive shaft for flat towing. Problem is there is no true neutral in the t-case (unless you have twin sticks), so you either end up spinning most of the t-case parts in 2H or in 4N. And supposedly one of the bearings inside is not too happy with that.

Of course if you have a rear driveline disconnect or a full floating rear axle w/ locking hubs, you would not have to.
