200 miles? You definitely need to remove the driveshaft. i'll be shocked if the manual even says anything about flat towing... and if it does, it will agree w/ above.

Why would you need to tie up the short end? Its not gonna be rotating and its not gonna fall out.. Like Roger said, it's going to bang around. You wouldnt want to hear a "clank clank clank" sound the whole time.

Ten minutes work to be safe. I know a friend of mine wished he had taken the time. Major carnage. He was dolly towing his rig, 1983, single T-case, 4 inch lift. On the road about half an hour when all of a sudden the rear wheels locked up at 65-mph. Total carnage rear diff, tranny, both rear tires flat spotted and front d-shaft. He had both the tranny and t-case in neutral. What we figured happened was the severe front d-shaft angle and an unbalanced d-shaft caused the CV to let loose locking up the tranny and rear diff. Guess what, when he flat tows now he takes the ten minutes. Are you willing to chance it?

I worked at a dealership in Pheonix when this guy came in with a Nissan behind a Uhaul. He had boxes of crap stored in the cab while he was towing the truck from Florida, the boxes shifted and knocked the shift lever into first gear at 65mph. The whole lower end of the engine was blown out the bottom of the truck. Pull the driveshaft.

thanks to all you who responded. i decided to just use my flatbed. i was going to flat tow because i have to haul it back over a 4500' grade back to san diego and didnt want the extra weight of the trailer.
but, it will be safer for the truck to just trailer it.
thanks again and it was a fun topic to watch!
