Getting the Wheeling Fever
I'm sorry, You have to set spark plug gap's in any ignition system.
I'm refering to the guts of a Points distributor, It Has a gap to be set appose to HEI which doesn't.

With an HEI distributer you:
1... Don't have to worry about Dwell
2... Don't have to set Gap's
3... Don't have to worry about condenser's.

4... Will get faster engine starts
5... Get cleaner spark Less carbon build-up.
6... Way less maintenence.

Points every 3000 miles gotta address them.
HEI,8mm wires, A set stock HEI plugs, you wont be bothered with distributer issues for at least 50,000 miles

A coil for a Points system produces 20,000 Volts and drops off at 4500 RPM

An Hei Coil produces 50,000 volts and drops off at 4500 RPM

A good MSD Super coil produces 60,000 volts and drops off around 6500 RPM.

Unless you like puttering around with your ignition system Go HEI. There are very good books on how an ignition system works at your local library and an HEI system is the only way to go!

Toolguy...You sound like an ad for hei dists!

4... Will get faster engine starts..
Not true unless the stock dist is malfunctioning!

5... Get cleaner spark Less carbon build-up.
Not true in ANY event!

An Hei Coil produces 50,000 volts and drops off at 4500 RPM

A good MSD Super coil produces 60,000 volts and drops off around 6500 RPM

Well maybe.. But only if needed.. Coils build voltage until the gap is jumped. A high compression high reving engine needs more voltage to make the spark.. HOWEVER in a standard Jeep engine neither coil will build more voltage than the stock coil before the gap is jumped. All that is needed to make the car run is a small orange spark. A blue spark can do NO MORE toward lighting the flame than any other spark..
YES race cars need more voltage. But in a Jeep, the Jeep doesn't know it is getting anything except a simple spark.

Please notice that HEI systems didn't become necessary until computers LEANED out the fuel mixture. It was found that the lean mixture sometimes didn't have enough fuel in the plug gap to ignite the mixture.. So the gap was widened
and a stronger coil was needed to jump that larger gap.
These coils do nothing exceptional in an older carbed engine..
You are correct on the maintnance however.. The price of a new system should be considered when thinking about maintaining the older system.. As there will be no other gain.

Sorry HEI Came out in 1973 for Big Chry cars, 1974 for FORD an GM. by 1975 pretty much all big 3 were HEI. It didn't have anything to do with computer controlled engines it had to do with emmisions.
And yes with HEI you get faster starts with hotter spark!
Also if you wheel and bring the RPMS up while under load you want all the ignition spark your coil can produce.

Browne with hei it is possible to set the gap as high a .050 however there will be no gain! As the mixture in a carbed engine is rich enough to set the gap to .030 and still light the mixture with a spark..
One must think about it a bit. The spark ignites the mixture and in a nanno second the explosion leaves the vicinity of the plug if the spark continues it is to no avail as the mixture in the area is already on fire and unlightable.
The mixture nor the cylinder/piston/valves knows any difference in which spark started the explosion. Nothing will be cleaner or faster or anything else.

Never fear Toolguy, when you give me a link I go there!

In case you didn't read bout the 10 horsepower it says:

Upgrading to a good set of spiral-wound plug wires and a hotter aftermarket performance coil will ensure that your ignition system keeps pace as you upgrade other engine components, such as the exhaust, camshaft, and valvetrain.

You see it is speaking of a complete performance upgrade.. It don't say one word about the hotter coil system helping a stock JEEP one bit.

As originaly asked you can change that to an HEI system and you will bennifit by giving that old dog some new life. And if your willing to take the time to educate yourself with a book about ignition systems you will learn you don't have to fear Technology.
