Short version.

-remove retaining c-clip inside hub (at end of splines)
-remove brake caliper
-support lower a arm with jack and pop upper ball joint (be sure truck is on stands first)
-lower jack fully and pop off the CV boot from the upper cup
-now remove a retaining ring just inside the upper cup (its hard to see, run your finger just inside the cup ans you should feel it. pop it with a screw driver.
-you should be able to pull it free (I say should because mines a rodeo, don't know pups)

OK maybe we are talking about two seperate things. Did you snap an axle (as in between the CV joint and differential)?
Or did you break a CV joint?

The CV joint is easy, like I said. You simply need to remove a clip that is just inside the lip of the upper CV cup. That should free the CV joints.

But if you snapped the axle inside the tube then I believe you need to drop the front assembly (diff, mounts and CVs).

Here is an article about replacing the boots, but it discribes the same process.

i broke the outer cv joint but when i went to purchase a new one they ordered the hole shaft with inner + outer joints and the shaft that goes in the tube there is two groves on the new shaft im asuming are for clips that would sit just inside of the end of the tube how do i get to those?

If you wanted to remove the whole assembly, I believe you need to remove the diffcover and remove some clips on the axle. These should be inside the carrier so it is difficult and even then you couldn't just remove the axle. You then need to remove the mounting harware on that side and some pressed fittings. I hae never done this so its beyond me but its not a simple task to remove the front axle assembly.

My sugestion is to return the axle you bought at the store and find a local Pick-n-pull. The just remove the CV axle from a comparable vehicle, cost less, less work and probably better than an after market axle.

Somone with experience with removing the whole front will pobably chime in and help you out on that.

The link Scott posted is great for changing the outer portion of the axle. I would read it first to get an idea of how the hub/spindle/axle assembly goes together. Then, if you are wanting to replace the entire axle all the way up to the differential, you can get an idea of what needs doen in THIS write-up. You won't be installing the drop diff brackets (so no cutting up the crossmember or anything); but the overall process is the same as far as disassembly. The aftermarket shafts aren't really celebrated for their durability when compared to the OEM pieces.

What were you doing when the axle broke? They should see no stress whatsoever when you are in 2wd.

Inner axle seal. Call St Charles and talk to Merlin. He'll understand what you need and get you the part for a fair price: 1-800-727-8066
