Hmmm I have never run into such a problem. MAybe going to a different parts house with that gear in hand and checking to see if another brand would allow the slinger to be used.
I am a fan of the slinger.. It helps to keep them little smudges of oil off of the front of the engine.
Timimg chains/gears aren't much of a problem in Jeep engines they seem to last forever..
