I had my 22r completely gone through by a very good machine shop. Now that I am re-assembling it I have noticed that the new timing chain seems a little long. The old one seemed long as well. I have always heard that most of the time the chain is so tight that it is hard to get on....mine just drops on easily. Could I have the wrong one? I can see where the new one could be wrong, but the old one too....

>>>*There are two versions of timing chains for this series. 1981 to 1984 is 98 links, the later 1985 to 1995 is 96 links.

If you try to put the 98 link on a late engine it is a LOT long! The other way around is impossible.

When all is correct we find we can set the top gear into place with our hands, they are snug but not overly tight. This is with the tensioner arm fully compressed....*EB

O.K. I counted the links and I have the 98 link chain. Truck was manufactured in March of 1984. sounds as if I have the right chain but it sure seems loose. Also is interesting to note that before I tore the motor down the old timing chain was very noisy. Any thing else that I should be looking at.

Another question if I might. If the chain is pulled tight on the right(drivers) side how far should it deflect on the left side assuming the tensioner is left off?

Getting the Wheeling Fever
has the engine been built before? decked perhaps? that'll change the dimensions and bring the head down.
