Hello great Sportage owners! I gots a Q on me sporty. I've been having this intermitent stall issue lately. Usually while I'm on the trail: As I come over a knoll, I'll lose power - IE step on throttle and no more gogo. It's like you turned off the key. If I let the engine stop and restart she fires back up, like normal. Last week dad and I went over one of our favorite trails and it died once out there and then again after turning left while driving through tombstone. It didn't show up again till eirlier this week while just cruzing at 45 - again, just dies like there's no ignition. Another side note - my coworker was following me tonight and he said I was billowing black smoke out the tail pipe when the engine is cold. I just checked the codes and there's no codes stored. 95 SOHC 5sp.
Any ideas, oh, great sportage gurus?
I just ran into something similar with my subaru - step on throttle and nothing. That turned out to be the needle valve assembly had unscrewed itself and weged against the float causing the carb to overflow the float bowl and flooding the engine. That was fun.

have you changed the fuel filter? How full was the gas tank going over the knoll ? the black smoke fuel or emissions, I would bet it's the filter

The fuel filter is about 2 years old. Doesn't matter what level. It will do it at full, half, 1/4 doesn't matter. When my cat went out, that was due to the egr vac lines were backwards after I had the head off for exhaust stud replacements, but I have not touched it since I fixed that about a year ago. I guess I could wire in my o2 guage and see what the computer is seeing.

Could be some water in the tank, or other crud intermittently blocking the inlet to the fuel pump at the pick-up in the tank.

Ok, I'll pull the pump and see if there is anything blocking it.

I finally added my air/fuel gauge this evening and boy, does that thing run lean. It's bouncing between off scale lean to halfway up the ideal area during off throttle and just under full; at WOT, it sits steady at the end of the ideal range. My Subaru ran between lean and just into the rich area for it's range and about halfway into the rich at full throttle. Interesting, that is. However, I seem to have acquired a hesitation now. Haven't gotten the fuel pump out yet - ran out of time. I did manage to get the MAF cleaned and also the contacts, so maybe that was it. We'll see. A side note, I've been having tranny troulbes when cold where 1st and 2nd are very stubburn, I changed the fluid and that stuff was grey and very thin. So, I don't know what that tranny shop put in there, but it wasn't good. I put Mobil 1 in there and I'll see how it shifts in the morning. Suby loves that stuff in her tranny - lets me slam second in low range at red line and hang the tail out. WEEEEEE!!! Do YOU Subaru?
