 rim to tire size

I have 215-70-15 on stock alloy rims, my wifes was stock alloy rims with stock tires 205-75-15. ? is what size tires can be put on stock alloy rims with not having any problems ? and still be with in the wheel walls, don't want her to get a ticket <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/scared.gif" alt="" />, John

OUtside diameter of these two sizes is the same that is rim + 0.70 x 215mm = rim + 150.5mm or rim + 0.75 x 205mm = rim + 153.7mm 3 mm difference that is within 1/8" Other "extremes".... I do not know....I know others here have a lot of ideas on this <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> What do you mean about the "ticket" ???

I always thought the 70 and the 75 was the profile, and the 205 215 was the wide, when both trucks are next to each other mine looks alot higher then hers

205 it the width in millimiters, and 75 means the height of the tire from the rim is 75% of its width. THis calculation is valid when you compare same model tire of different sizes.
HOwever, there can be real differences between manufacturers. My son has 205 75 Michelin tires that are smaller in diameter than 205 70 of another american made tire...
4x4 dedicated tires are also generally stiffer and keep the car higher from the ground than same size "car" type tires.

I highly doubt that any tire you mount on your stock rims are going to stick out past the fenders. I have ford after market rims and mud tires and they barely stick out in front and not really at all in the rear.
Sportage sold.........

30x950x15 is a good size for the stock wheels. 235x75x15 is a little smaller but look good on a stock Sportage.
Like you said 215 is the width in mm. 70 is the aspect ratio. To find out the height of a tire here is a formula. It is not excact because the tire manufactors are all differant. I will use your 215 for and example.
215 x .70 / 25.4 x 2 + 15 = 26.8
215 width
x
.70 sidewall heigth
devided by
25.4 converts mm to inches
x
2 sidewalls
+
15 wheel size
like I said this isn't excact but it will get you in the ballpark.

30" tall, 9.5" wide, and 15" rim. Just like the metric sizes they will very from differant manufactors.
