Need a Spot

Ok, I have been doing a lot of research on this, but I could never get a strait answer. What I want to know is, if I where to take a V8 from a 2000 Chevy Silverado and replace my 1998 Jeep Wrangler engine, would it be legal in California? I know some what about the smog deal, I'm not sure if they are checking the Jeep based on its original engine or will they base it on the engine that is in the Jeep.
