Hi all- new around here. we have an 87 Isuzu 4x4 truck, complete runner w/ a broken frame. looking to put it in a ex-cab pickup or maybe a jeep? any suggestions? And could anyone help ID the engine series that this would be- makes searching a lot easier. 2.2L turbo.
of course an Isuzu would be easiest, but not very easy to find. Also available is an 98 trooper gasser v6 5 spd 4x4. seems like maybe a hard swap, and not really the pickup that is wanted. this truck is for sale in Maine, unless used for the swap.
I have seen a few Toyotas w/ Isuzus.
So- anyone do any swaps that may have some advice?
abilities range from dropping in the engine in a bolt up replacement to a complete custom fab job.
the current set up uses a pass. side T case, so finding a P/U that matched would save a lot of work, and prolly (maybe?) the cost of having an adapter plate made.( if one is needed- any sources?) Tranny/ enigne mounts are pretty straight forward to fab up.
Well, look forward to any insight/ advice.
Thanks, mo

Hi Mo. Welcome.
The engine you're looking at is a C223T series. It's generally considered a good little motor, but no powerhouse. Putting it in a second generation Trooper would result in you having a dog of a truck, as the later models are notably heavier than the original applications of these engines. Obviously, the easiest/best swap would be to another Isuzu P'up. Second would be a first gen Trooper, but that doesn't give you the pickup you're looking for. Anything past that is going to involve at least some fabrication, I would wager.
Others here are more familiar with what goes into a swap, and other potential applications, so I'll let them speak to it more fully.

I know that Scouts and Jeeps Samurias Sidekicks Trackers all had a pass side pumpkin up front, Mitsu/Dodge Montero/Raiders and Ford Broncos are DS drop. You can often find non running Scouts on fleebay and craigslist cheap A Diesel Willys would be Schweet

OK- so I talked w/ my buddy today- he picked up a late eighties toyota one ton uhual truck. it has an auto and a v6 in it. he is planning on dropping in the isuzu running gear- 5 spd and T case, and keeping it 2wd. we figure that is easier than messing around w/ any adapters, etc. should be able to fab up motor mounts and tranny xmember, cut driveshaft and roll...
He is gonna scrap the box and build somthing else- maybe even hack on a fullsize PU bed/topper.....
I wonder about the 2wd/4wd toyots- is it possible to add a yota 4x4 front axle to a 2 wd truck?? that would be tite- a 4x4 toyota 1 ton DIESEL...
any thoughts???
