start with what you can do.
you have some diagrams to trace the wires? there is '89 factory manual around here somewhere
you have a meter to check the wires ? sears or walmarts will sell a meter with instuctions for 20 bucks. That will be your best money spent for as long as you will be fixing cars.

sounds like a bad connection. inhibitor switch...maybe you didnt re-install it correctly.That happens. Only way to know is check continuity with your meter
