Getting the Wheeling Fever
Awright so I took apart and cleaned the neutral switch, and it still won't start. I'm almost ready to just push it out into the street and set it on fire. SHort of spending the $300 to have it towed (again) and have them not find anything wrong again, what's next? Donating it to Goodwill? Argh. I know it's gonna be something stupid, too that if I just throw the truck away the next guy will spend $1.98 and have a truck with 75% new parts on it. OK Now I'm just venting.

well, well, well...
start with what you can do.
you have some diagrams to trace the wires? there is '89 factory manual around here somewhere
you have a meter to check the wires ? sears or walmarts will sell a meter with instuctions for 20 bucks. That will be your best money spent for as long as you will be fixing cars.

sounds like a bad connection. inhibitor switch...maybe you didnt re-install it correctly. That happens. Only way to know is check continuity with your meter

So please tell me it's easy to incorrectly (re)install the inhibitor switch... if that's all it may be I won't go crazy and blow my truck up. It was NASTY down there (sunflower seeds, petrified fries, cigarette butts, etc) and I'm HOPING just cleaning it out in there will get it going again.

Yep, it's pretty easy to install incorrectly. In fact, I didn't adjust it right when I reinstalled it after fixing my shifter a couple of weeks ago and now I have to apply slight backward pressure in park to start it. I'd adjust it, but it works great as an anti-theft device.

Download MontyMcV's 89 engine/chassis/body FSM from www.mitsubishilinks.com. Should be the same as your 91. Test the switch according to the chart on page 21-93 of the auto-tranny section. Adjust per procedure on 21-94.

So this is driving me mad. I've taken it apart a total of 3 times now, and it still won't start. I followed the manual as best I could without a multi-tester so that's probably the problem (or it's just me ) [Linked Image]
this is it, right? Jeez. SO long story short, when I had my divorce, the X changed the lock on our storage unit where all my tools are, and I FINALLY got her to let me back in to get them. Of course half of them are missing, and anything with a plug or wire on it looks like this now:
[Linked Image] My multi-tester only has one plug on it, along with most of my power tools not having plugs anymore...charming. SOrry, I just had to vent about it. Well, what goes around, comes around.
Now back to your regularly scheduled programs.

that "plug" dont matter, it is just a metal conductor. Clean off some of the insulation to expose some wires in that meter lead. Now what you have there will work for this test.
Turn the meter dial to the lowest Ohms setting and touch the "plug" to the bare wires (black to red) The dislay should go from 0 to .003 or something... Pull them away and it goes back to 0

That is all you need to test the switch. Now test it in your hand, then put it all back together and find a connector down stream and test again...

I have not had to deal with this yet, so I cant say where those connectors are. the manual should have something but I aint fount it

there it is ...you should see continuity (.003 ohms) bettwwen the two black and yellow wires on the switch when in the Park position. and infinity (0 ohms) when in Drive

if that is good, reconnect your battery cable (because you always take it off to mess with any wires) and change your meter to check 12v to ground on one of the black and yellow wires when key in start position

Does it turn over when you try to start?
