If you ever have to do a stop like this knowing you are from colorado, I was scared to even read this thread I hear ya. Thankfully, the pavement was nice and dry. If there had been a presence of snow or ice anywhere on the highway, I'd have just said "screw-it" and caught the next exit instead.

I will say, though, that the lack of having no swaybar installed made the experience more exciting than it needed to be.
Ever thought about adapting a disconnect system similar to the S/T swaybar system from Tera-Flex? Not sure if the arms are long enough to mount the torsion bar out of the way, and you'd have to design new end links, but it would work otherwise.

Oh I've thought of it plenty of times. Just haven't gotten around to it, I guess. What I should do is put the dang thing back on until I work that out, or only take it off when I'm trailing.

Thanks for the info, you are making me feel a lot better about rebuilding the 4 banger in mine, I was considering going turbo or doing a V6 swap.

I haven't noticed much of a difference since taking my swaybars off. I had a close call in ATL a couple weeks ago when it was icy/snowy. Sphincter tightening experience, to say the least. But it didn't feel like the swaybars would have helped at all. Now keep in mind I do have Gen II brakes all the way around except for the master cylinder. Glad to hear you're OK Joe

Well thank you sir! Glad to be here.
Still, I'd be cautious if I were you. Jamming the brakes on ice won't really give you the proper perspective of an emergency stop without a swaybar as it would doing so on dry pavement, where the tires will grab a whole lot better.

I've locked it up on dry pavement to make sure they all lock at the same time. Now, that was when I was ready for it and not in a panic. So that may have thrown my perspective off. But it felt real stable. Could it be the difference SWB vs LWB?

Remember a swaybar (anti-roll bar) will not help in a straight line. No sway-bars WILL make a difference when cornering or braking and cornering, especially in an emergency. There can be no doubt. That doesn't mean it's dangerous to take them off, just less safe, if you can see the difference.
Let's face it, you can be in far more dangerous situations on the road than driving a Montero with no sway-bars. I drive a Miata on the interstate everyday. I rode a bicycle to work and back from 1988-2002! Seen what I mean?

Could it be the difference SWB vs LWB? I would think it'd be worse on a LWB, because you're dealing with a larger body (more top-heavy).

That doesn't mean it's dangerous to take them off, just less safe, if you can see the difference. The difference between having and not having a swaybar can be felt even if going in a straight line. I've felt that difference, and it is distinct. Where you feel it, though, is (as I mentioned above) if you are not just stopping but also throwing in small steering movements to avoid a collision (but then technically it's not a straight line). I think you need to throw a comma in the bolded area, right after the word "No", otherwise your statement doesn't make sense.
