In all honesty, just "making it go" shouldn't be all that complicated. People do thsi w/ FWD cars all the time... you only need the front half to drive at all, just cut it off and attach 2 together.
My bet is, they just removed the rear driveshaft, and each half runs on the fronts w/ hubs locked. Put the "rear" t/c in neutral (or unock hubs), and off you go.
