check and lubricate the linkage, odds are the dreaded previous owner never lubricated the linkage, and it is siezing up on you. The 231 has notorious Z gate issues, come to think of it most t cases with a Z gate do. As part of my bi annual inspection, I inspect and lube the shifter mechanisms. Its cheap insurance IMO
