Might also want to try a leak-down test.
And, here is another test:
If you think it is bad rings, drive to the top of a hill and then put it in 1st and go downhill, allowing the engine to do all the braking. This will cause a high vacuum condition and if it is rings will usually suck oil by them and show up as blue smoke. Have a friend with good eyes follow you.
