Maybe I'm being dense here, but was that a big time, definite, DON'T DO THAT! ?? Any connection that is intended to run a bunch of amps for a looong time needs to be a FITTED connection. Most auto jumper cables don't fit the post well enough to even get a vehicle started! The weak link in ANY clamp types is the fit between the clamp and the clampee. Using clamps of any kind will creat heat where you don't WANT heat. The welding clamps you speak of are intended to fit on a flat surface. I wouldn't give it a second thought. What you MIGHT do is to wire YOUR vehicle with the propper plugs and wiring.. Then make a seperate pigtail with the best clamps you can find...this is for loaning only! Let the other guy use the clamps if he MUST have a winch.. Big JIm <img src="/forums/images/graemlins/pfft.gif" alt="" />

That's sorta what I thought you were saying. I'll set up a couple vehicles with the plug in fittings, and get a couple extra pairs for the others who want them to be sure they're the right size.
I'm not getting any of the answers that I wanted! But that's a dern bit better than setting vehicles on fire or getting pushed off a highway by too much trailer load!

Winching is done when one or both vehicles aren't level, terrain is uneven, and the vehicle being winched is usually bouncing. Not the time to have a winch depend on spring-loaded booster cables. Plus, most booster cables aren't designed to carry the load demanded by some winches, especially those with series-wound motors -- they can pull upwards of 450 amps -- and not just for a few seconds like a starter.

<img src="/forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />I'm setting it up with welding cable and plug in fittings designed for those amps. 285 max. It'll limit the number of people who can use it, but I'll throw a pair of the connectors for the battery in the booney box for whoever...
They just closed Sutton Lake where those last pics were from....Now declared a wildlife preserve.
